Nikita is the small dog at the center of the comic series “Niklas & Nikita”. Together with Niklas, she experiences quiet episodic stories about everyday life and travel between Upper Bavaria, ferries, lakes, small villages and long days on the road.
While Niklas tries to bring order, structure and planning into everyday situations, Nikita usually follows her nose, spontaneous impulses and the hope of finding something to eat. Many of the series’ small situations, misunderstandings and quiet moments emerge from this contrast.
“Niklas & Nikita” is not built around big adventures or artificial drama. Instead, the series focuses on closeness, everyday life, travel, small observations and the special relationship between a human and a dog.
Nikita in the series
Nikita is not a traditional “comic hero” who has to solve problems or complete missions. Her role in the stories is mainly shaped by the direct and unfiltered way she reacts to the world around her.
She does not orient herself around plans or rules, but around smells, sounds, food, water, movement and spontaneous impressions. While Niklas usually tries to organize situations and keep control, Nikita is often distracted by small things that suddenly become more important to her in that particular moment.
Many of the series’ typical situations emerge from this contrast: unexpected changes of direction, small misunderstandings, short interruptions or moments in which the perspective on a situation quietly changes. Conflicts rarely arise from bad intentions, but mostly from different ways of seeing the world.
Despite her impulsive behavior, Nikita never appears aggressive or chaotic. The character remains calm, honest and immediate. This is an important part of the quiet tone that defines the series.
Her relationship with Niklas
At the center of the series is the relationship between Niklas and Nikita. Both characters react to situations in very different ways, yet this difference is exactly what makes them work together.
Niklas usually tries to plan ahead, stay organized and keep an overview of things. Nikita, on the other hand, is often more interested in the immediate moment: a new smell, water at the side of the road, food, other animals or small details that suddenly catch her attention.
Many stories emerge from this contrast. At the same time, the series is rarely about serious conflict. What matters more is how both characters gradually learn to adapt to each other and accept the other’s perspective.
This creates the calm and warm atmosphere that defines “Niklas & Nikita”. The focus is not on spectacular events, but on small shared moments that become meaningful for both characters.
Traveling with Nikita
A large part of the series takes place while traveling. Together, Niklas and Nikita move through different landscapes and small places by bicycle, ferry and the Niki-Mobile camper van. Many episodes grow out of simple situations on the road: breaks near the water, encounters during the journey, small mishaps or spontaneous interruptions of an original plan.
The environment is not just a background element, but an important part of the storytelling itself. Lakes, coastlines, ferries, village squares, campsites and quiet roads influence how situations develop and how Nikita reacts to her surroundings.
Especially important are the small moments between the actual destinations: short stops, unexpected discoveries, waiting together or situations in which a tiny detail slowly turns into an entire story.
Typical things in Nikita’s world
Throughout the series, many small recurring elements are connected to Nikita. These include her strong attention to food and smells, spontaneous changes of direction during otherwise planned situations and her particular curiosity about water, new places and unfamiliar surroundings.
Certain objects also appear again and again. Most important is the small yellow fabric duck, which plays a recurring role in many episodes and has a strong emotional meaning for Nikita.
Many of these recurring elements are never heavily explained or dramatized. Instead, they simply become a natural part of everyday life shared by Niklas and Nikita. This is one of the reasons why the series feels calm, familiar and grounded.
